Bliss Inspiration : Dove Real Beauty Sketches

This is not my usual post topic about the beach or my life near it, I suppose indirectly it actually is. I have been truly inspired by this video and desperately felt the need to share it. It is an ad campaign launched by Dove and focuses on  the perceived beauty of women and just how much our internal dialogue really impacts on the way we as women, project ourselves into the world.

My first viewing of this add has came at a particularly poignant time for me. With Queensland having the largest rate of skin cancer diagnosis in the world and the amount of time my family and I spend out doors, we all have regular skin checks with our G.P. I had a somewhat scary experience at one of my check ups just before Christmas that left me with the removal of some potentially dangerous sun spots. Luckily for me everything has turned out to be fine and I continue to be extremely pro active in preventing further skin damage under the guidance of my G.P. and Naturopath.

But yesterday, as I concluded my appointment my G.P. asked me one simple question, which was why I wear foundation all the time? He went on to explain just how damaging it is to the health of my skin (which I really did already know but continued to wear makeup any way) and that I didn't need to be wearing it to look 'pretty'. As he said this I felt the burn of tears well up in my eyes because I do not feel 'pretty' or beautiful without the use of foundation to even out my blotchy sun damaged skin. Mr P. backed up the statement telling me that he honestly doesn't see the need for me to be covering up with make up so often, apparently he's doesn't see the same thing I see. My reaction to these statements really took me by surprise, I thought I had more confidence in myself then that. But honestly, the thought of wandering around and going about my day without makeup scares the heck out of me. So I've decided to rise to the personal challenge of letting go of the need to rely on makeup to feel 'pretty' or beautiful and to begin to value the sparkle and inner beauty that others around me obviously see, just like the lovely ladies in the Dove ad.

So, how about you? Do you depend on your make up and foundation to bring self confidence? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Sending you much bliss, Heather xx

Post update: I have noticed that the YouTube clip mentioned in this post does not load properly on iPad's and mobile devices as apparently you may need adobe flash player or the like to view it. You can go directly to it via the highlighted links in this post. So sorry…

  1. Hi Heather! I totally depend on my foundation, I never leave home without eye mascara and some color on my cheeks, well, except when I go to the beach... But you're right about how the others see us, you gave me a lot to think about.
And I didn't know about the Dove ad, so moving, thank you for sharing it.

    1. Well, you have just explained my beauty routine Alex. I have tried to be 'make up free' this weekend as we haven't had any social events other then those in close proximity to the beach. It has been soooooooo hard not to reach for my foundation though none the less. We are meeting friends this afternoon for coffee, that will be the true test. Thanks for stopping by Alex. Sending you loads of bliss, Heather xx
